Research priorities identified at Australian Abalone Growers Association (AAGA) meeting

The Australian Abalone Growers Association (AAGA) meeting was held early September in Geelong. The two day meeting and workshop was in part sponsored by Skretting Australia. Matthew Bransden, who manages Skretting's abalone customers, provided a presentation on global and local trends in finfish aquaculture.

Other speakers also addressed on-farm power saving options, the current state of knowledge on the Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) disease, abalone response to summer stress, and other recent research being undertaken on abalone.

Research providers also had the opportunity to discuss facilities and opportunities for R&D at their institutes.

The second day workshop looked to invigorate abalone R&D in Australia by identifying a wish-list of potential research projects within the key themes of Genetics, Nutrition, Health and Environment and Marketing.

The event was well attended by the majority of abalone producers within Australia and numerous other stakeholders, and was an excellent opportunity for the farms to network and discuss common issues.
